Working Alone is for Idiots

If you're tired of refreshing this page every day like a d-bag, you should probably subscribe to the RSS feed.

When newbies get into any sort of online moneymaking venture, the biggest mistake they make is trying to do everything alone. Admittedly, building your own personal online business from the ground up with no help sounds really cool. Many people stumble on a crappy forum or blog (digital point or john chow) and think that they’re going to go from $0 to a livable income in a month with no experience, no help. Then they spend a couple months doing nothing but reading forums, blogs, whatever, making posts begging for help choosing a niche for their blogspot + adsense blog so they cash in bigtime. After a few months of failing at that, they either give up, get creative and start building something quality, or start making friends and tossing ideas around.

The single best thing you can do to make money online is to find some buddies. Aside from a few small experiments with ppc back in the days of Aol 3.0 and BabylonX, Nickycakes had no experience with affiliate marketing until a few months ago. A good online buddy from back in the day, Lorne Fade, helped kickstart the new and improved Nickycakes. All that time spent playing EvE online and DoD:S could be used for banking dollars instead of pwning nubs. So that was a start. One buddy in the business.

After reading and posting, making some crappy sites, watching tiny adsense earnings trickle in, it was time to step it up. The best decision was to go out and find a few buddies already in the business to bounce ideas off of. It worked wonders. It really really helps you think of new ideas if you start discussing them with someone. Without the help of several other key people, there would be no facebook ad information on this site. The majority of this info was concocted during conversations with other people trying the same stuff.

If you’re having trouble getting anywhere with AM, feel free to hit up cakes by clicking the contact button above. However, there are some people who SHOULD NOT BOTHER sending nickycakes messages:

  • you barely speak english. sorry but its painful to read terribly broken english.
  • you’re looking for a niche for your new made for adsense blog
  • you frequently post on digital point for any other reason than gaming idiots
  • you’re involved with any e-books
  • you want cakes to code/build/do anything for you for free
  • you’re pissed that cakes is posting info that may help people cut into your moneymaking
  • you want cakes to do anything illegal, or you’re doing anything illegal and want cakes to hear about it

If you use IRC, feel free to stop by #cakes on irc.freenode.net. If you’re too newschool and have never used IRC, then hit up www.mirc.com and when you figure it out, come stop by.

Anyone else have good experiences networking with other affiliate marketing people?

I met this dude Brian Gardner over the Internet. He now is a wordpress design big wig…but back then he was doing ppc arbitrage stuff. He walked me through the ppc abri process which ended up making me around 7k profit (which was my downpayment on my house =) ). Knowing the right people can help that’s for sure.

Would you say that bouncing off people on forums like wickedfire.com or syndic8.com is better than working alone?

  3. Ruck Says:

One of the smartest moves I have ever made is partnering with a fellow markter and programmer online. I was the “do it yourself” type when I first started but your dead on cakes about getting in good with others.

  4. nickycakes Says:

    @rgh, absolutely better than nothing

Have you tried COD4? For the XBox360 it’s amazing. I was a quake - mouse/keyboard guy for a long time but this game really works for console. I highly recommend it. Easy to jump in and out too, not like an MMO.

Thanks for all the info, I’m learning a helluva lot.

Yeah I played a little COD4 for the pc last week. Was fun. But I still haven’t played Orange Box yet, which I hope to get for Christmas. I know it’s a little late, but I’m still excited =))

how do you guys get to the point where you have enough trust in people that you may only meet online regarding financial matters like this? Just jump in?

I know AM fairly well, but live in Charleston, a ghost town for serious web talent - everyone and their mother owns a design shop, but it all looks like 1996. Nobody wants to step out on a limb, even when there are still so many opportunities if someone wants to actually work instead of sitting in the cube to collect an hourly wage or doing client work. Granted, my clients are where I make most of my money, but it’s bleeding my soul away ;)

Anyone else encounter apprehension over long-distance business partnerships and have advice on how to run them well?

  10. nickycakes Says:

Well you don’t necessarily need to have a business partnership. We’re talking more in terms of asking people for a little help, or offering a little help of your own. I publish information I find helpful on this blog without expecting anything in return from you guys. It just helps stay motivated if you have someone to bounce ideas off of.
