SMX East: Anyone Going?
Nickycakes just got a flyer in the mail for SMX East which is a Search Marketing conference from Oct 6th-8th (next month) in NYC. Having never been to a SMX event, the Cakes has no idea what goes on there, what kind of people attend, what the sessions are like etc.
The conference chairperson (the guy who organizes everything) is Danny Sullivan who is the editor in chief at Search Engine Land, and also the guy behind Sphinn.
So, is anyone going, or have you been before, and is it good?
Please comment.

Networking opp’s are great. Sessions are pretty good. Worth it if your travel expenses are not out of control IMO.
I will be there, not really going to do any sessions, just hang out with some people and then attend some of the parties.
Lemme know if you’re going – can have you by the office one day.
I’ll be there. No idea if its going to good, but pair it up with the one day Aff Summit just before it and there should be something there. Looking forward to meeting up with my Affs anyways.
I went to SMX advanced in Seattle. Good networking. Most sessions were good. Just a couple sessions were lame (including useless interview with Matt Cutts). Bottom line – would recommend to go.
Havn’t been but I want to go. Perhaps the next one.
Sup Cakes, Don’t know if you remember me but I’ll be heading down there for sure. See you there
Went to SMX West and SMX Advanced (spoke at both
) and highly recommend the shows. The networking is awesome, both in sessions and on the expo floor and lunch (which is provided, unlike other cheapass conferences i’ve been to) as well as at the parties.
The type of folks varies a bit from version to version. West was a general SEO crowd with some inhouse folks. Advanced had a lot more inhouse folks, imho – some panelist asked and 50% of the [packed - lots of people - representative of the conf] room raised their hands. Seemed about right to me personally as I met more of those folks there too.
I forget where I read it, but apparently west coast shows = more indie webmasters/geeks and east coast = more agencies and fancier dress.
The panelists are a mixed bag. I learned a LOT at West, but then saw some of the same presos at Advanced. Some other people at Advanced said nothing of importance (e.g. PPC preso: “test, test, test, and here are things to test [insert generic top 10 list on 100 blogs here].) Others, e.g. some PPC and especially Give It Up were flat out AWESOME.
Worth going to, imho. I’d also get in touch to see about going as press since your blog has a decent amount of subs.
Went last year in NYC and did a write-up about the experience. This could provide some insight. http://www.squareoak.com/blog/smx-was-it-worth-it-did-i-learn-anything-will-i-go-again/
