Don’t Search Domains With Network Solutions

If you're tired of refreshing this page every day like a d-bag, you should probably subscribe to the RSS feed.
Being so early in 2008, it’s hard to imagine that someone could possibly claim the “Biggest Douchebag Move of 2008 Award.” Well get ready to start believing.
Instead of explaining what’s going on in words, Nickycakes will try it with pictures and words instead, internal monologue included:
“Humm dee dumm….I feel like registering a domain today. I want nickycakes-is-the-man.com because Nickycakes really is for the win. I should go to namecheap and check to see if it’s available.”

“Wow, amazing, nobody else thought to take it. Great. But I’d like to shop around and see if any other sites are offering the domain at a lower price than the already unbelievably low prices that namecheap is selling them for. I’ll check at Network Solutions because they’re pretty much the biggest trusted domain name registration site and have been respected in the industry for years.”

“Ok, well their prices pretty much sucked donkey balls. I guess I’ll just buy it at namecheap then. Back to namecheap I go.”

“Uhh…wtf? In the 2 minutes between the time I left network solutions and the time I looked the domain up again on namecheap, someone registered my obscure ass domain name? No F*cking way!”
So here’s what’s going on. Sites like Network Solutions get to put holds on domains for up to 4 days for free. So what they’re doing is, every time you search for a domain, they just register it, and if you want it, you have to pay like $35 to get it from them if you want it within the next 4 days. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait the 4 days to get it. Oh, but it gets better. Since they registered it, it goes into a list of registered domains, so other retards who read those lists will know the domain is going to be on the market in 4 days too, so unless you’re sitting at your keyboard in exactly 4 days hitting the refresh button, some jackass could snipe your domain from you.
And what did the VP of Network Solutions say when people started asking questions about it? He basically said that they were doing it for the safety of the customer. Lol. You can read the full statement here. But make sure you bring a shovel and boots so you can wade through all the bullshit.
Nickycakes uses namecheap.com (not an affiliate link) for registering domains. They’re really cheap and you can search google for namecheap coupons to get a discount.

I have always used Namecheap but even this past year this happened to me. A company called Moniker pretty much sat around and scooped up all my shit while I would research domains.

as long ago as ‘91 it was suggested to me not to seach around in domains because people would be watching log files and registering likely looking ones.

Should organize a massive “search off” where thousands of people do a bunch of stupid searches all on the same day to make them register hundreds of thousands of extra domains automatically. Probably nothing to their pocketbook but maybe it will be enough to get some attention and maybe get them fined for refund abuse. Though doubt that as well since there is already so much kiting going on.
