Affiliate Summit West 2010 Recap Part 3: The Drama

Drama drama, everyone loves drama, and Las Vegas is somehow packed with Affiliate drama during ASW.  This year was no exception.

Ryan Marchsomething vs. Nickycakes

Ryan Machara

Ryan Machara

Ok, so within the first few minutes of Nickycakes walking sleepily into the Meet Market on the first day of Affiliate Summit, he was approached by some tall dude who immediately got in his face and blurted out “So, you gonna talk shit to my face?”  Since Nickycakes calls people out and smacktalks almost indiscriminately, it’s hard to remember who everyone is sometimes.  After Nickycakes glanced at the guys nametag and drew a blank, the guy went on to start saying stuff about Convert2Media and how they accused him of stealing their marketing materials, etc.  Completely uninterested, and still not really remembering who this guy was, Nicky started talking to his friend Brittany who he hadn’t seen in a while.

Turns out that this was Ryan Machara from Elite Clicks Media, a company started after some employees left Convert2Media.  There was apparently some drama about ECM ripping off some of C2M’s website and copying their promotional materials such as the credit card look-alike business cards and their employee shirts they use for shows.  Pretty much everyone completely forgot about this almost immediately because, frankly, NOBODY CARES.

Sorry for not talking more, Ryan.  Nickycakes took you for some random shit-talking nobody who thinks they matter.  Turns out he was right.

Shoe vs. Yu

pals 4 life

If you’ve been paying attention the last couple months, you’ll probably know about Dennis Yu and his constant shadiness, alleged blackmail, alleged extortion, and alleged complete dishonesty in almost every business venture he’s involved in.  If you haven’t been paying attention, feel free to educate yourself on the drama.  This post by Shoemoney accurately sums up the original beef between the two.  Followed immediately by this post.

It was soon discovered by Nickycakes and others that Shoemoney was actually scheduled to be on a panel about Facebook Ads at Affiliate Summit.  Not one to let good drama situations go un-noticed, Nicky quickly got in touch with Shoe about this and then this post was made in which he said that in lieu of an actual presentation, he was going to do a powerpoint of emails he had gotten from Dennis’ former employees describing “what a dirtbag dennis is.”  AWESOME!  That’s what pretty much everyone was thinking.  People even went and bought expensive Platinum passes for the summit in anticipation.  Nicky even started charging the batteries on his video camera.

Well, unfortunately, as soon as the Affiliate Summit staff got wind of Shoemoney’s plan, they promptly removed him from from the panel (depending on who you ask. asw staff say he was never removed).  Super-sadface.  This sucked for a few reasons, not just because there wouldn’t be a big argument between the two, but because Dennis is completely unqualified to give any presentation on Facebook considering that his Facebook accounts have [allegedly] been banned for many months.  Shoemoney, on the other hand, as much hate as he gets, actually has experience in the affiliate space and with Facebook, and is qualified to give such a presentation.

So, a good portion of the affiliate industry was outraged by this development and went on a crusade to let people know the truth about this guy, especially since the Affiliate Summit staff were not interested in hearing any of the accusations, even with lots of email evidence (nickycakes still loves you guys).  They refused to kick Dennis off the panel and let Shoe back on, so the people who had bad business dealings with Dennis in the past started speaking up.  Eventually, the pressure became too much for Dennis, so he withdrew from the panel.  Not publicly, of course.  It took an inside source forwarding the actual email Dennis sent when he withdrew to actually find out about the news, but he did anyway.

Apparently Shoemoney was put back on the panel, and while Nickycakes was not there personally, he did see plenty of twitter updates from people in that session saying it was good.

And what about Dennis Yu?  What did he do during the show.  Well, apparently he showed up and was accompanied the entire time by a hired bodyguard.  Would love for someone to come forward with pics of that hilarity.

Maxbounty vs. Ryan Eagle

For those who don’t know who Ryan Eagle is, he runs an affiliate network called EWA and was made famous by Nickycakes in this post: Ryan Eagle.

Anyway, upon arriving at the meet market or the exhibit hall, affiliates were greeted by this gem which was sitting on the Maxbounty booth:

Ryan Eagle

Ryan Eagle

Now, obviously Ryan Eagle’s name is not written anywhere on this thing, but to the astute observer, it’s pretty obvious who this is supposed to be.  Of course it’s a stock photo of someone a little more chubby and with a little more of a tan than the real eagle, but it gets the point across.

Nicky met up with Ryan early on in the meet market on Sunday, immediately after Ryan had seen this thing for himself.  Contrary to his normal “haters gon’ hate yo” attitude, he was visibly shaking and talking about how angry he was about this and how he had to restrain himself so that he wouldn’t get physically violent with the people at the booth.  Nickycakes suggested that instead of getting mad, he should just go take a picture with the damn thing in order to diffuse the situation and pretend like he didn’t care, which he later did.

Shane Dollas vs. Ryan Eagle

So apparently a few months ago there was some forum drama on Wickedfire started by this guy “Shane Dollas” who started talking tons of smack about Ryan Eagle as well.  The guy made a bunch of youtube videos which have since been made private, and started a pretty long thread with some back-and-forth between many parties making fun of Dollas’ woodgrain basement panels among other things.  Most everyone thought that Dollas was not really an affiliate and was paid by someone, possibly Ryan Eagle himself, for some reason or another.  More retarded things have happened, like when Nickycakes created the ‘Circa’ and ‘Dullspace’ alt accounts to troll everyone on Wickedfire, which worked really well.

Anway, Nicky was really surprised to actually see that Shane Dollas actually existed and was at Affiliate summit.  He ended up getting pics with both parties involved, but apparently the two never actually met, so the street brawl that would have inevitably ensued will need to be postponed until the next show, sadly.
